PUC’s Hydrant Flow Testing Underway
Sault Ste. Marie, ON (April 24th, 2023): PUC would like to advise customers in the West End of the City that crews will be in the area to conduct hydrant flow tests over the next few weeks. These flow tests determine the flow rate and water pressure at specific locations within PUC’s water distribution system. These tests are required under the Fire Code to determine how much water would be obtainable during a fire emergency.
During these tests, there is a possibility that a flow reversal could occur within the water distribution system. This significant change in the rate or direction of flow of water in the distribution system, may cause sediments in the watermains to be disturbed and carried along with the water. As a result, there is a chance that customers in the areas could experience discoloured water.
In the event customers notice that their water is discoloured, they should:
- Turn on a cold-water tap (to keep the sediment out of the water heater) and let the water run for a maximum of 15 minutes.
- It is best to use a bathtub tap or a basement laundry tub, as there is no screen to trap any sediment.
- If the water does not clear up after 15 minutes of flushing, turn off your tap, wait 30 minutes, and try again. If the water does not clear up after two 15-minute flushing cycles, please call PUC Customer Experience at 705-759-6522 Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 705-759-6555 at all other times.
Customers are asked to contact PUC Customer Experience should they experience discoloured water or any unusual change in water quality. PUC regrets any inconvenience these tests may cause and wish to thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation.
